TRIAL BY GENTRY
Pacer Pulls Up
Well
The Auckland pacer, Gentry, worked keenly and pulled up well at Addington yesterday morning. He was not after time and took 4min 48 3-ssec for his two miles, the last half mile in Imin 11 2-fsec. Gentry was given several sharp sprints over a furlong throughout his work and then steadied down again. Gentry will contest the National Handicap at Addington tomorrow and he could give a good account of himself. His trainer, P. Stewart, said yesterday that there had been a change of plans about a driver for Gentry. Stewart had received advice that F Smith will travel south to drive the Dillon Hall stallion Beautilima made the pace for Tactile, which raced on a slack rein most of the way, in a run over one mile and a half at an even pace. Beautilima was held back at the finish to stay on terms with Tactile after taking 3:25 for the 12 furlongs, the last half-mile in 1:8, and the final quarter in 33 1-5. Tactile dropped behind Beautilima by about four lengths racing to the straight and came fairly well on the inside over the final furlong. Tactile should be greatly improved as a result of that run, but whether he will be quite forward enough to win the Canterbury Challenge Stakes, in which he will be handicapped on 24 yards, seems doubtful. Arizona Gal and Iniquitous went away four seconds in front of Gay Baron. They finished together after taking 3:32 1-5 for the 12 furlongs, the last half-mile in 1:5 3-5, and the final quarter in 30 3-5. Gay Baron's effort was a useful one as W. K. Tatterson sent him very wide on the bends. Lynwood Earl went on his own over 12 furlongs in 3:26, the last half-mile in 1:5, and the final quarter in 31. He has improved since his arrival in Christchurch, but still looks to be below his peak Our Jimmy made the pace and finished a neck in front of Avante. with a length to Graeme Scott, which had given hts companions a start of three
seconds, after taking 2:48 2-5 for one mile and a quarter, the last half-mile in 1:5. and the final quarter in 31 4-5. It was sound work on the part of all three. They will probably resume racing at New Brighton next month.
Morano Boy was too good tor Zagar and some slow-class opponents at the end of one mile and a half in 3:23. the last half-mile In 1:5. and the final quarter in 31 2-5. Morano Boy looks to have improved as a result of the race he had last Carina Star showed that he was in great heart for his engagement in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes when he sprinted the last six furlongs of his work in company with two others pacers in L O Thomas's team tn 1:40 1-5. the last halfmile in 14. and the final quarter in 29 4-5. Carina Star Is not noted as a smooth beginner from a standing start. However, provided he does not lose too much ground, he could be prominent.
