The Victorian State Government has lost its battle to prevent the entry into Australia of toy gambling sets now being sold in Melbourne shops. The Chief Secretary (Mr Arthur Rylah) said today. •The State Government has done its utmost to have these toys barred from Victoria, but in vain."
Mr Rylah said he objected twice to the Federal Minister for Customs (Senator Norman Hentyi against admittance of these types of toys. Senator Henty excused the entry on the grounds that other games such as ma-bles dice. ludo. and cards offered similar gambling opportunities.
Today, parents can buy roulette wheels. bingo (housey housey) sets, ‘'double your money" boards, and poker chips, paper “pound” notes, and cardboard shillings and pennies The controversy began after a report from Hong Kong in June revealed that toy gambling sets would soon be arriving in Australia The report said Hong Kong teachers were complaining of children gambling regularly with the sets in school playgrounds.
