New Zealand's population is nearly 2Jm. On June 30. it was 2,435,478 —1.250.071 males and 1.253,407 females —says the Government Statistician (Mr J V. T Baker). Maoris numbered 174.918. 88.930 being males and 85.988 females
The population increased 8181 between March 31 and June 30. Births exceeded deaths by 10.770. but departures overseas exceeded arrivals by 2589. In the same three months in 1961 births exceeded deaths by 10.189. But the total increase was only 6027 because departures exceeded arrivals by 4162. Latest figures of population in Pacific islands are: —Cook Islands. 18.378 (September 25. 196 U; Niue Island. 4858 (December 31, 1961); Tokelau Islands. 1960 (December 31, 1961).
