LAUNCHING NOISY
Moon Rocket Acoustics (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) COPENHAGEN. Aug. 21. A moon rocket launching would produce a noise equal to that of 5,000,000 Caravelle jet air’iHters. the fourth International Congress on Acoustics was told today. The noise would be intolerable within a radius of more than 12 miles, four United States scientists said in a working paper. The scientists, headed by Mr John M. Cole, cf the Aero-Space Medical Research Laboratories of Ohio, said this was the noise expected from the giant American Nova moon rocket. The noise could shake down walls and chimneys, wreck buildings and cause physically unpleasant ” sensations in human beings, they said.
The four scientists, who have sutdied noise effects at Cape Canaveral, said a definite adjustment to the moon rocket’s noise would be necessary for people even 23 miles from the launch site.
