ADDITIONAL PATROLS
Trial Period In November
A sub-committee's recommendation that five Christchurch surf clubs should provide an additional full beach patrol on Sunday afternoons received a mixed reception at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf LifeSaving Association last night. It was decided that the scheme be given a trial by the five clubs concerned during November.
Delegates from North Beach and Waimalri favoured the move. New Brighton and South Brighton opposed it. and Mr A. N. Staples (Sumner) said his club already covered the area from Scarborough to Shag Rock and felt It would be a hardship to patrol the South Brighton shore adjacent to Heron street as well.
A motion that the recommendation should not be adopted was defeated by 11 votes to four before the association agreed that the recommendation be given a trial.
The Sumner club’s area was changed to the beach between Scarborough and Shag Rock. Championship Programme A proposal that the Canterbury championship carnivals be held on two week-ends—-with no non - championship
events on the programme—and that trophy events be held on a separate day. was favoured. It was brought forward by Mr B. J. Turpin (Taylor's Mistake) after the delegates had considered a further recommendation by the sub-committee that the championship carnivals should be concentrated on two weekends. rather than on four separate Sundays, as at present Later, Mr Turpin successfully sought the holding of a nonchampionship carnival at Taylor's Mistake during the coming season.
