SCANDINAVIAN SHIPS

Four A Year To Load In N.Z.

Four ships a year from three Scandinavian shipping companies will load cargo from New’ Zealand ports under a new operating association with the Conference Lines—Shaw Savill Company, the Port Line, the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Blue Star Line. The Toronto, belonging to Wilh. W’llhelmsen's. Norway, will be the first of the four ships to load, in November. Three representaitives of the companies concerned visited Lyttelton and Christchurch yesterday and will visit Timaru today. The representatives are Messrs E. Olsen, of the East-Asiatic Company. Denmark. Mr G Magnusson of the TransA'.lantic Shipping Company. Sweden, and Mr J Anderson, of Wilhelmsen’s.

Scandinavian cargo ships have brought cargo to New Zealand from 1920. but had only irregular schedules until 1946 when six sailings a year were fixed. From 1950. there have been 13 sailings a year divided among the three companies.

The ships, after discharging cargo at New Zealand ports, have sailed away in ballast, mainly to Australia, to pick up cargo for the return voyage to Europe. The four ships a year to load cargo from New Zealand ports will take wool and general cargo and refrigerated cargo in those ships equipped for the purpose. The three representatives of the Scandinavian companies were impressed with the expansion work going on at Lyttelton. Napier and Tauranga, said Mr Olsen yesterday It was obvious that New Zealand realised the importance of efficient waterfront work.

The three men will visit Dunedin, Invercargill and

Bluff before returning to Wellington. Thev will return to Europe, by air. on August 31
