CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE’S WORK

Thanks and appreciation for the guidance and interest shown by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) as patron of the Catholic Women's League in the Christchurch diocese, were extended in the league’s twenty-sixth annual report presented at its annual meeting at “Maryknoll.” last evening.

Details of the league’s welfare funds were given as follows: Holy Seminary Bursary Fund now amounts to £1828; St. Peter the Apostle Fund. £74 collected during the year; Maori Missions, now amounts to £144; and the annual diocesan donation towards a sponsored Fijian student. £33 Mission donations for the diocese during the year included £ll2O, and goods valued at £7Bl. The president (Mrs J P Donnelly) said that the first fund was now less than £2OO short of its target and should be reached during the coming year. It was also reported that the league was now represented on the following women’s organisations: National Council of Women, Pan Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association, Save the Children Fund. Members had also assisted in several city street collections, and in Health Stamp sales. Mrs Donnelly said the league was hoping to extend its experimental outings service for elderly persons. She asked for further offers from members of transport for old persons who did not have anyone to take them out. A suggestion that the league make future provision for training in leadership of the organisation was made by Mrs Donnelly. “Unless we train our young women and give them some guidance, we will not be really assured of capable leaders for our league." she said Members were asked to consider the question and to have suggestions ready for the October Dominion conference in Christchurch.

Messages of goodwill on behalf of Bishop Joyce were conveyed to members by the Rev. Father J. Cuneen. Officers elected were: president, Mrs J. P. Donnelly; vice-presidents. Mesdames A H. Alexander.
