RELEASE HOSTEL
Property At Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 22 The Government has accepted the offer of a property at Kitenui avenue, Mount Albert, for use as a prerelease hostel. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said today that the hostel would accommodate up to 10 borstal trainees in the last two or three months of their sentences. Mr Hanan said that the trainees would go to work each day and pay for board and lodging from their wages. It was generally agreed that trainees nearing the end of their sentences needed some preparation before returning to the community, he said. The hostel would serve as a transition stage between absolute control and complete freedom. Experience in Invercargill indicated that residents need have no concern about the behaviour of hostel inmates The conduct of boys in the Invercargill hostel had been of a high standard. “The trainees value the privilege and realise that any abuse will result in their immediate return to the borstal. and probably postponement of their release (fate," Mr Hanan said.
