Building Of Two Hotels To Be Started Soon
Work on two new hotels, both of the motel type, will be started simultaneously in Christchurch in a few months. Tenders will be called soon for the construction of a 44-guest motel in Wooldridge road, near the airport, for New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., and for the erection of a 16-guest motel in Blenheim road, near the Main South road, for Ballins Industries, Ltd., and New Zealand Breweries, Ltd.
The plans will allow the Wooldridge road motel to be expanded in a second stage to accommodate a total of 100 guests, and second-stage plans for the Blenheim road motel will provide accommodation for 32 guests.
Working plans for both motels are being drawn by the architects, Messrs Hall and McKenzie.
The Wooldridge road motel will have a large garden bar, public, private, and house bars, a restaurant, and accommodation for 16 guests in the central building. In the first stage, there will be accommodation for another 28
guests in two wings each containing 14 motels. There will be no accommodation for guests in the central building in the Blenheim road motel. It had been tentatively planned to build a tavern on this site, but the Licensing Control Commission has not yet defined what type and standard of building and fittings will be required to obtain a tavern licence. The motel in Woldridge road is to be named the Russley Hotel. The Blenheim road motel may be named the Golden Fleece, after one of the earliest hotels in Canterbury.
