Gay Display Of Dolls At Plunket Exhibition
African warriors. Red Indian chiefs, New Guinea tribesmen, Eskimo hunters, Fijian dancers, and Turkish noblemen appeared yesterday in a city department store. They were some of the 300 exhibits in the Plunket Society’s first dolls’ exhibition in Canterbury.
Amidst Royal patronagethree dolls resembling Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11. Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Kent—exhibits in the 14 classes included dressed dolls from miniature to 26in tall. Some were entered by children, and some by adults However, not all of the local doll-lovers tending dolls were women or.girls. All dolls are arranged in attractive bays. The international section is comprised of typical characters from all over the world arranged beneath wall maps with ribbons indicating the origin of each figure. There is a small section arranged in honour of the Thai Royal visit which includes one exhibit dressed by some dental nurses from Borneo.
Other exhibits include bride dolls, peg dolls, fairy dolls, baby dolls and twins Opening the exhibition on behalf of the Mayoress (Mrs ,G. Manning), Lady Hay said she believed this would be an undoubted success, because of the wonderful display. and the proven merit of the Plunket Society’s work. Judges of the exhibition were: Mesdames F. S. Palmer, C. Crawford, B. M. Agnew, M. Clarkson and Miss E. Neville. Exhibits will be displayed until the end of next week
