Supreme Court GUILTY OF ASSAULT
Acquitted Of Robbery
A Supreme Court jury yesterday found Wilkie Campbell, aged 40, a workman (Mr D. J. Hill), guilty of assaulting Carl Paru at a house in Fitzgerald avenue on June 20. It found Campbell not’ guilty of robbing Paru of 10s i or stealing 10s from him on that day. Mr Justice Richmond remanded Campbell in custody for sentence on Friday. Mr I. J. C. Polson, for the Crown, said that Paru —also known as Alan Rangiira Rongonui Werimu Narapari —went to a house in Fitzgerald avenue on the evening of June 20 where Campbell was living. Campbell invited him into an adjoining room, where there were two other men and a girl, and asked him for money. Paru said he had no money, and Campbell seized him, took his wallet and threw it to a man who had been sleeping on the floor. The man on the floor—Tunny Chick —saw that there was only 10s in it and threw it back. Campbell then squeezed Paru’s throat, said Mr Polson, and took 10s from Paru’s wallet.
Paru called the police, and a struggle occurred when the police arrived, in which Campbell hit Paru in the face.
Giving evidence on his own behalf, Campbell said he took the 10s either to give to the landlady of the house towards Paru’s board and the cost of a window Paru had broken, or to repay Tunny Chick for money Chick had lent Paru. He agreed with Mr Polson that he said to Paru when the police arrived: “Take your lousy 10 bob. You squealed on me for 10 bob."
