RUGBY Test Trial For Wallaby Team At Levin Today

LEVIN. August 20. The Horowhenua Rugby team, which will play the touring Australians at Levin tomorrow has not won a provincial fixture this season while the Australians have three successive wins on their tour so far. The Horowhenua team, drawn from only six senior sides 'is hooeful. but even its mcst ardent supporter is expecting a victory for the tourists. After their runaway win over Wairarapa at Masterton on Saturday, the Australian® can be expected to record another comfortable win. The form of the Austra-. lians could have a great bearing on who plays at Athletic Park. Wellington, against the All Blacks on Saturday. Almost certainly on trial is the first five-eighths. P. F. Hawthorne. He has plenty of potential, but is still inexperienced. Should he fail tomorrow, the team management may play the second string—possibly the first half-back. K. V. McMullen—as a five-eighth outside K. W. Catehpole.

McMullen started his Rugby career as a five-eighth and could well play in that position later in the test series. It would not be the first time that an Australian side has preferred its two half-backs to be in the side In 1955. C. T. Burke, who almost became a naturalised New Zealander with tihe frequency of his visits with Australian teams, played al first five-eighths in a test outside B, J. Cox.

Catchpole, the half-back in tomorrow's match, would be hard to drop after his masterly display at Masterton and another good game tomorrow should make his place secure. Another Australian whose form will bear scrutiny tomorrow is the wing threequarter, J. S. Douglas. The only Victorian representative in the team, Douglas could develop into a test class Ihree-quarter. So far he has played only once on tour, at Gisborne, but he showed that day he Has plenty of pace and determination. The Australian team tor the first test is expected to be announced on Wednesday.
