Beach Claims Another Victim—A Bulldozer
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 20. A bulldozer transporter weighing several tons was caught, by the tide on the treacherous Muriwai beach on Sunday. The owner of the sixwheeled vehicle. Mr N. Brown, of Waitakere, said that he was driving along the beach on a toheroa hunt about 8 o'clock at night when, the truck developed engine trouble and before he could get assistance the tide had come in and surrounded it. When a salvage vehicle, equipped with a winch, went to recover the truck this morning all that was visible were the six wheels protruding from the sand. The force of the incoming tide had rolled the truck on to its roof.
The winch was connected to the axle of the truck and the chassis, wheels and mechanical parts came free. The sand “claimed” the cabin, ‘ray, mudguards and bonnet.
Returning along the beach with the remainder of the bulldozer transporter in tow. the crew of the salvage vehicle saw a big car stuck in the sand only a matter of
feet away from the incoming tide.
The salvage vehicle pulled the car to safety just as the sea began lapping around its wheels.
