TEACHERS’ MORALE
“Sensitive To Criticism’’ fNJE. Press Association) N. PLYMOUTH, Aug. 16. The status and morale of teachers were lower now than they had been when he started teaching 40 years ago. the retiring headmaster of the Devon Intermediate School. Mr A. L. Herdman, told the Taranaki Education Board today. “The status is lower because of the lowering of entrance standards into the profession," he said. “However, it seems something is being done about this. “I think morale is low because teachers feel they have not had a very sympathetic press. Teachers are very vulnerable to criticism “Children can take home stories from school which are accepted, although they are not always correct. “There is much criticism
of teachers in newspapers—not just editorially, but in letters from readers. This makes teachers feel they are not appreciated. “I feel the board could do something about this.”
