IMPROVEMENTS TO WHARENUI POOL

ALTHOUGH pool facilities at the Wharenui Swimming Club last season proved to be up to standard, the club has resolved not to let matters rest Its aim is to have a pool with the best facilities in Christchurch and one that could rank very high in New Zealand for its type and size. Tenders have been called for the installation of an oil burner heating unit, to enable the club to start teaching and coaching early in October. Young children will be able to stay in the water much longer and so learn to swim and gain confidence more quickly. In an effort to provide some social facilities for both its young members and the many voluntary helpers, the club plans to build a club room on top of

the filter plant house and office. The room, of 1100 sq. ft, will be used for winter training and games as well as social functions, and it is thought that some form of parents’ and supporters' group will take over the organising of the activities. The construction of this modern pool would not have been possible without the encouragement and cooperation of local organisations, businessmen and club supporters Proof of this assistance, and of the worth of the club's officers, can be gained from the fact that when the club started the project the bank balance was £l5O. Already more than £9OOO has been raised and when the latest two projects are completed the club's contribution to this Riccarton amenity will be nearly £ 15,000.
