Murtagh's Speed

r rHE Manawatu defence found the Canterbury forwards a lively handful when the tw’o Rugby teams met at Palmerston North last Wednesday, but it was not surprising that wouldbe tacklers were left fl hindering by the speed al M. J. Murtagh.

Murtagh’s pace wa quite astonishing at times and it required desperate efforts by Manawatu's swiftest backs to bring the Canterbury flanker to the ground. But if Manawatu had known that Murtagh was the sprint champion of Waitaki Boys’ High School a few years ago, he might have been more closely watched. At school Murtagh recorded a best time of 10.4 sec for the 100 yards, a very good effort indeed. In the Manawatu side was the former Otago representative. L. Smith, an old boy of St. Kevin's College, who often ran against Murtagh. Murtagh, said that Smith. a wing against Canterbury, “usually managed to pip me.”
