PROBATION TERM
Man Who Stole £lOOO (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. Aug. 14. A clerk, Edward George Evans, aged 22, was released on probation for three years today after being convicted in the Magistrate's Court at Auckland on a charge of stealing £lOOO from the Bank of New Zealand. Evans pleaded guilty to the offence, which was committed on August 8. He was also ordered to pay £25 toward the cost of the prosecution.
Sergeant E. C. Welsh, the police prosecutor, said Evans was a clerk employed in the pay section at the Chief Post Office at Auckland On August 8 he went to the Bank of New Zealand with other employees to cash a wage cheque for £7013. The paying teller made an error and gave Evans an extra £lOOO in £5 notes. Evans denied taking ‘the money, but later called -at the police station and admitted the offence Sergeant Welsh said Evans returned the money he had left and the keys of a car which he had bought on August 10 Evans told the police he took the money on impulse Mr W S Spence. S.M.. said he would not send Evans to prison because there was nothing premeditated about the offence, partly because there was no loss of money and partly because he had gone to the police and confessed his guilt.
