WHANGAREI GLASS
Production Delayed {NJt. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 14. Teething troubles have held up quantity production of building quality sheet glass &t McKendrick’s new Whangarei factory and the Customs Department has increased import allocations to New Zealand merchants to avoid a serious shortage. Auckland merchants said today that sheet glass equal to or better than that imported was promised to them on July 12 and import licences were cut to 15 per cent, of the 1960 allocation. Import licence extensions have been made in the last few days increasing the 15 per cent, to 40 per cent.' In Whangarei today, Mr George McKendrick said that “quality glass was not coming off as quickly as we would like. It was on our recommendation that the Government increased the import allocation. We have been a bit slow getting going and did not want to see the country embarrassed by a shortage.” he said.
“We are trying for maximum co-operation with merchants over this at the moment but we just can't produce the tonnage yet. It will come with a slow buildup. When the factory begins producing in quantity, then import licences will subsequently drop to the aopropriate level.” said Mr McKendrick.
