CHAIR-LIFT WIRE SAGS
Skiers Hurt At Thredbo (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Aug. 3. Two men skiers were hurt and others had lucky escapes when the cable carrying the one and a half-mile chair-lift at Thredbo, in the Snowy mountains, sagged this afternoon. As the double chairs of the lift began to swing, about 40 passengers jumped to safety into deep snow. Two men fell and suffered head injuries. Recent heavy falls of snow —2oft deep in places—are believed to have saved many of the skiers as they jumped into thfc snow Bft below them. The accident occurred just after midday when most of the 1000 skiers holidaying at Thredbo were at lunch. The lift was carrying passengers only to the staging about two-thirds of the way to the top. An official of the company operating the lift said the lift came to an emergency stop. This caused the cable wire to come away from one of two towers, and the line and the attached chairs began to sag.
