LEAGUE Admittance Of S. Africa 'Hopeful' Say Delegates
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 6. Delegates who arrived tonight for a meeting of the International Rugby League Board in Auckland were hopeful that South Africa will be admitted as a fifth member. AU three overseas delegates arrived together—Messrs W. Fallowfield, tlie secretary of the board and of the English League; A. Blain, the secre-tary-general of the French association; and W. G. Buckley, president of the Australian board. Mr Fallowfield and M. Blain were impressed with tlie football they saw played in South Africa. “League seemed to be bigger than Rugby,” said Mr Fallowfield. “Rugby is dead apart from the test matches. We saw a provincial Rugby match which attracted 800 spectators and a League club match which attracted 6000. “There is every sign, especially with the use of the South Africans playing in
England, that South Africa could field a team which could hold its own in an international tournament."
Mr Fallowfield said that no specific proposals for alterations of the laws would be put before tlie meeting. Some rules, however, such as the kick-off, needed simplifying. The remaining major topic to be discussed by the board is the staging •of the next World Cup • tournament, which is due to be held in New Zealand. Mr Buckley said that Australia would give New Zealand every assistance required in the staging of games.
