Women's Hockey Canterbury Beats Wellington
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON. Aug. 5. In an interprovincial ma .ch p.ayed in Wellington on Saturday. Canterbury gained a meritorious win in a game ro which the territorial exchanges were fairly even. However, Canterbury proved superior in certain vital aspects. Its defence "•as more closely knit, and it possessed the better combination. particularly with regard to the feeding of the forwards by the halves. There was too much solo p.ay in the Wellington vanguard. which demonstrated trie futility of long throughpassing. This method generally resulted in the bail being given to the Canterbury backs. With better combination in the forwards
and greater experience in seeking unmarked by some of the younger members of the line, Canterberry might have won by more. In the deep defence for Cante, oury, J. Wilson was a sound custodian, and J. Mur* ray and N. Lennie were skilful backs, whose intelligent passing created many counter-attacks. A. Fleee. S. Comer and A. Colville formed a powerful half-line which fully contained the Weilingt-on forwards and made innumerable openings for its own vanguard. At inside-right F. Kelly covered much eround and fed her colleagues most capably Her back-passing was also most effective. Although closely marked by a skilful player in B. Thomer. D. Eddy escaped often enough to make some fine breaks on the right-wing, and A. Giles was a useful opportunist at centre-forward. H Walker was a most conscientiou .nsfde-feft, whose dribbling and oassmg were as valuable as he: back-tackling. The best Wellington players on defence were J. Cameron a ieft-back, P. Stewart at right half. A Gordon at centre-hal and B. Thorner on the left. Oi attack E. Love was easily th< most constructive forward 01 the right-wing, and R. O’Brie in the centre showed speed an some dribbling ability in ope □lay. The Wellington playei ippeared to be handicapped b some curious prohibition on < reluctance to use the revers stick. Hence Canterbury alwaj looked and was the more ski ful team. Canterbury's goals were score oy A. Giles I2> and H. Walke and R. O’Brien scored for We ington.
