Boxing NIKORA WINS N.Z. TITLE

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. August 5. In a rousing bout which had more than 1100 fans on their feet. E. Nikora became lightheavyweight boxing champion of New Zealand when he knocked out Johnny Nomura in the sixth of a scheduled 15round contest at Rotorua on Saturday night. Spectators saw Nikora at his best as he coolly and ruthlessly stalked Nomura, who took a ?reat amount of punishment rom Nikora’s right hand. Nomura fought back gallantly and often hurt Nikora with ripping lefts ta. the body and point-scoring straight lefts. Nomura was knocked to the canvas by chopping rights in the second round, taking two compulsory counts. Nikora became the new champion when, half-way through the sixth round, he nearly battered Nomura through the ropes. Nomura went down and was counted out as he tried to pull himself off the canvas.

But Weir’s cover defence got him out of a lot of trouble. . The Australian was always ready to fight back, and at times he hit solidly. In an amateur contest. P. Donovan (Napier), a former New Zealand champion and Olympic Games performer, beat D. McKenna (New Plymouth), the New Zealand lightweight champion, on a technical knockout in the third round.
