Hundreds of banners were carried by more than 1200 persons along Queen street today in the Hiroshima Day march organised by the Hiroshima Day Committee, in conjunction with the New Zealand Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Last year when the March was first introduced, it attracted only 550 marchers Nine organisations took part in the march, which was led by church leaders, including the dean emeritus of the Diocese of Waikato, the Very Rev. C. W. Chandler. and organisation leaders. The mass meeting at Myers Park was presided over by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr D M Robinson).

Other speakers were the president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, the Rev. E C. Leadley, a lecturer in economics at the University of Auckland, Dr Muriel Lloyd-Prichard, the president of the Auckland Carpenters’ Union, Mr J Gillies, and the vice-president of the Auckland Metropolitan Youth Council, Mr M Hart.

The meeting resolved to continue opposing the testing of nuclear weapons, and to call upon the New Zealand Government to work whole-heartedly to stop all further nuclear tests and to take the lead among the smaller nations in pressing for general disarmament.
