Teachers Back From Noumea Two modem language students from the University of Canterbury. Messrs D. T Tryon and B Stevenson, who have been in New Caledonia for the last three months as 'he first students on a visiting teacher scheme arranged by Professor R. T Sussex, were so successful that the Noumea Assembly has asked that such visits be made annually, and for a period of six months. In Christchurch last even* ng Mr Tryon said :he scheme had been a great idea for improving one's knowledge of the French language When he first arrived in Noumea, he spoke the language with difficulty, but now he was much more fluent. Mr Tryon said the scheme was of an experimental nature. and had been arranged by Professor Sussex. as head of the modern languages department at the university, and by the Education Department in Noumea. During their three months in Noumea the two students had worked as as istant teachers and taught for 12 hours a week. Ten of the 12 classes w -Te taught at the Lycec La Perouse The remaining two classes in commercial English, were at the Lycee-Technique The aim was to give the French students taking EngHah rtudies an opportunity to practise the language, and for the two Canterbury student* to do likewise with their French.
