PLASMA FOR MELBOURNE

Exchange System Begun Blood p’asma from the Christchurch Hospital has been sent to Auckland on its way to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories. Melbourne, for drying and fractionation. and its equivalent in dried albumen will be returned Dried albumen which lasts indefinitely, can be used for tranfusions instead of plasma, which is perishable. “We have sent our first lot of plasma to Auckland, about 90 pints of it. This is the plasma from about 200 donations of blood,” said Dr. F. W. Gunz, hematologist to the North Canterbury Hospital Board. “This is the first time we have done it. and it looks as if it will be a regular exchange in future.” Auckland was the clear-ing-house for plasma from various parts of New Zealand in this exchange scheme, said Dr. Gunz. The plasma would be sent from Auckland to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories. After the plasma was dried and fractionated, the dried albumen would be sent- back io Auckland for distribution Christchurch would get its share oi this albumen.
