Survey Of Nassella In Two River-beds

A survey of nassella tussock in the upper Rakaia and upper Waimakariri riverbeds was ordered yesterday by three noxious weeds control groups. Concern at the danger of tussock spreading from these areas was expressed by representatives of the groups after inspectors reported. Special assistance, available under the act governing tus-

sock control, was envisaged by the meeting.. The meeting was of representatives of the HalswellMalvern - Paparua - Springs. B'lesraere-Selwyn. and Banks Peninsula noxious weeds groups committees. This was the first time the three groups had met. The chairman was Mr M. E. Jenkins.

Another meeting will be held after the survey, with representatives from Ashburton invited to take part. The inspectors were asked to seek the co-operation of the Ashburton County Council and the Department of Agriculture in tfhe survey. A request to include the common names of weeds seeds on analysis certificates was referred back to the Department of Agriculture. This would be complicated because some weeds had several common names, a letter from the department said. Exceptions blackberry, ragwort. and Californian thistle —were marked in the certificates because these had only one common name.

Agteeing with Mr E. J. Stalker (Springs), the meeting decided to ask the department to list all Mie known names with the botanical names of seeds.
