Mistake On Plaque

The official opening of the Canterbury Savings Bank was performed yesterday by the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake), but the engraver of the wall plaque which will commemorate Mr Lake’s action anticipated him by a year. When the New Zealand flags which had covered the plaque were drawn aside, the plaque could be seen and it read: “The Canterbury Savings Bank was declared officially opened by the Minister of Finance on August 1, 1961. . . .’’ Explaining the error in dates, Mr M. A. Connelly. M.P.. the president of the bank’s board of trustees, said there had been a misunderstanding because the original engraver had not been able to fulfil his contract, and had passed it on to another engraver. However, said Mr Con. nelly, the present plaque was regarded as temporary only, and within a fortnight a permanent plaque would be placed on the wall of the bank’s building. This, he said would certainly revert to the official date of August 1, 1962.
