Addington Fire

Sir, —At the time of the Addington grandstand fire there were considerable discrepancies in the accounts of what actually happened. There was also criticism (some, of it voiced editorially in the press) of prevention measures in relation to the fire. Three months later, the Chief Fire Service Officer visited Christchurch to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the fire, as was reported at the time. After another five months the results of this investigation remain unknown to the general public. By sheer lapse of time the public’s interest in this matter has no doubt been reduced to an absolute minimum. But the public interest remains the same —that the discovered facts should be made known. Your report of the meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board inspires no confidence that the chairman of the board is aware of his responsibilities in this connexion.—Yours, etc., G. V. SUMNER. July 11. 1962.
