£20,000 Lottery Grant ‘Received’ By Committee

(NJ!. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 11. The national committee of the Freedom-from-Hunger campaign has decided to “receive” the grant of £20,000 from the Golden Kiwi lottery profits. This raises the total funds of the campaign to date to £272,000.

The decision was made at a meeting in Wellington today. The resolution was carried by a substantial majority of the committee, which comprises representatives of more than 40 national organisations. The full text of the resolution was:

"That the New Zealand Freedom - from . Hunger campaign committee receives, with thanks, the grant of £20.000 from the Internal Affairs Department to the freedom-from-hunger appeal, and resolves that the donation be placed in a separate account by the committee and, in accordance with the Minister’s request, be spent in New Zealand in the purchase of fertilisers, seeds farm implements and the like, at the discretion of the Committee for the Relief of Starvation and Malnutrition Overseas, within the freedom-from-hunger programme, with the purpose of assisting the overcoming of hunger in the future.” The secretary of the campaign committee (the Rev. H. C. Dixon) said this was the first occasion that such a large gift had been made to the campaign with specific instructions as to its use.

A further resolution, carried unanimously, stated: ‘That this meeting places on record its approval of the action taken by the chairman, secretary and executive officers in calling the meeting of the Free-dom-from-Hunger campaign committee when advised of the grant of £20,000 by the Internal Affairs Department from the profits of the Golden Kiwi lottery.” The principal resolution was placed before committee members with the following matters for noting given at the conclusion of a general statement explaining why the meeting was called: “That the committee of the campaign was set up at the invitation of the Prime Minister. “That this £20.000 donation was approved by the Cabinet on the recommendation of the Minister of Internal Affairs. “That certain wishes were expressed by the Min. ister of Internal Affairs as to how the money should be used. “That the donation comes into our hands as members of a large national group who are trustees for the many thousands of beneficiaries in the under-de-veloped countries.”
