CARNIVAL WEEK AND RETAILERS
Public Relations
Officer's Reply
The Canterbury Progress League and the Public Relations Office did not wish to enter into a controversy on retailer participation in community carnivals and festivals, said the Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr E. G. Beckett) yesterday. He was replying to a statement by Mr L. Corner, president of the Canterbury and Westland Retailers’ Association, which replied to a report made by Mr H. E Radley. chairman of the league's public relations committee. Referring to the report, Mr Beclcest said: “We felt it was our duty to draw the attention of the public to what appeared to be an attitude of apathy and parsimony on the part of the retailers when compared with the efforts of retailers in other centres, particularly when these attractions were planned to boost local trade and turnover.
“Mr Corner has replied with a statement on the situation as seen by his organisa. tion. and we have no further comment to make,” said Mr Beckett.
