F. D. Cantwell Clothing. Ltd.. Christchurch, has been granted the New Zealand franchise for the manufacture under licence of Ralex garments. The franchise agreement was signed yesterday by Mr G. Abel, managing director of Ralex Coats. Ltd., of Sydney, and Mr F D. Cantwell, managing director of the Christchurch firm. Cantwell Clothing, a private company, specialises in the manufacture of women’s coats and suits. The firm recently moved into a new 15.000 square feet factory in Antigua street. It manufactures under licence a range of the English Alexon garments. Mr Cantwell said his firm's production would rise from 350 garments a week to 500 garments, and his staff would be increased from 54 to about 70.

Mr Cantwell said Ralex was the largest manufacturer of women’s garments in Australia, the range covering coats, suits and rainwear. His own firm was the largest specialist manufacturer in New Zealand of women’s coats and suits. “My firm is very pleased to have secured this franchise,” he said. ‘‘lt means that we are assured of prompt access to the latest in overseas designs and patterns.”

Domestic consumption of butter had fallen to the lowest level since the end of food rationing.
