BIG BULL WAPITI
N.Z. Record
Span
(NX Pros* Association) INVERCARGILL, July 11. A New Zealand record span has been declared for the antlers of a big bull wapiti secured this year by a Dipton farmer, Mr A. Harrison, who ended a “chase” that began five years ago. Mr Harrison first saw the bull in 1957 and it was only 25 to 30 yards away but his gun had to remain silent for the beast was in a block drawn by other hunters. He kept hoping that he would eventually draw the Pitt Valley block on Bligh sound. Mr Harrison and his mate won the block. Mr Harrison found his target within 300 yards of a clearing where he photographed it in 1957. The head is a heavy-tim-bered 12-pointer, with a length of 48 7-Bin, a spread of 50 l-Bin and a span of 47 5-Bin . . . yet from a bull past its prime. A member of the New Zealand Deerstalker's Association, Mr Harrison has entered the head for the national trophy contest, which will be decided in about a month.
