CHALLENGE FAILS
Labour Motion On Power (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 11. A notice of motion on the Cook Strait Cable, by Mr S. A. Whitehead (Opposition. Nelson) was unsuccessfully challenged in Parliament today by the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) on the grounds that it contained political propaganda. The notice read: “In view of the statement by the Minister of Works and Electricity (Mr Goosman) that the Government is now prepared to accept the policy of the Labour Government in respect to the supply of cheap electric power to approved industries, and in view of the fact that the Minister has also stated that such industries should be located as close as possible to the source of power, that this House now requests the Government to review its policy to spend between £lB million and £25 million to transfer electric power from the South Island to the North, and, instead. use some of that money to assist in the establishment of such industries in the South Island." When Mr Hanan objected to the notice of motion, the Speaker (Mr Algie)* said that as a notic. it was not subject to challenge as a question would be. and that he would accept it. Mr Whitehead also moved: “That this House deplores the continuation of nuclear testing. especially those conducted in space, and requests the Government to take all possible steps to seek a complete stoppage of these tests by all countries." Under the new rules of the House, both of these notices will go down on the Order Paper, and will become subjects of debate if they are reached before the end of the session.
