Long Radio Blackout

Communications between i Australia and North. America I were blacked out for more j than five hours today as a result of the gigantic American nuclear explosion in space last night. The chief engineer of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission, Mr W. W. Jenvey, said communications faded out at 2.30 a.m. until soon after 7.30 a.m. The head of the upper atmosphere section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Dr. D. S. Martyn, said further communications fadeouts were expected as particles from the explosion settled in the upper atmosphere.
