Columbia Damaged
(N^P.A-Reuter— Copyright) NEWPORT (Rhode Island*. July 10
The America's Cup contender. Columbia, broke her mast yesterday just after the start of her observation trial race against Nefertlti. The 90ft mast of drawn aluminium broke 12ft above the deck under the impact of a 25knot south-westerly wind.
Both yachts were on a port tack and the Columbia was well ahead of the new Boston boat when the mast went—"as if chopped with an axe." as one eye-witness said
The mast took most of the rigging and a member of the crew over the side. Mr O. E. Haslam, of Newport, was fished out of the sea within a minute Nefertiti went on to win easily
A rew mast is being rushed to Newport and will be stepped tomorrow so that the Columbia can return to the trials without delay.
In the other race yesterday Easterner won for the first time when she beat Weatherly by 2min Msec.
