DUTY ON RESINS

Imposition In 12 Months

A decision of the Minister of Customs ■ (Mr Shelton) published in the New Zealand Gazette last week makes provision for the imposition of a duty on some types of synthetic resins. “Last year I referred to the Board of Trade for inquiry and recommendation a request which had been received under the provisions of the customs tariff then operating for a duty to be placed on certain synthetic resins,” the Minister said.

“It has been decided to accept the board's recommendation that a duty of 25 per cent, be applied to some alkyd resins, but the duty will not take effect for another 12 months. “The delay in applying the higher duties is intended to afford those industries at present using imported alkyds of a type made in New Zealand a reasonable opportunity of endeavouring to arrange to have their requirements of such resins produced locally. "In deciding to accept the Board of Trade’s recommendation, the Government has taken cognisance of the present extent of local manufacture of synthetic resins and of developments taking place which will expand production. This trend is welcomed, especially from the point of view of the saving in exchange resulting from production of those resins which are in greatest demand,” Mr Shelton said.
