Desert Chief and Prince Filou anowed that they were in the ngnt order to race at the Wellington meeting next month when they worked attractively at Wingatui this morning. The trials were held under ideal overhead conditions, but the tracks were heavy after a frost, followed by rain. The fast work was held on the No 3 grass. Desert Chief (R. N. Marsh) was not out for time, but he recorded the best five furlongs of the morning when he coverec the distance in 1:8, the first two furlongs In 28 2-Jsec. The Ruthless five-year-old has done well since he scored a clear-cut success in the Birthday Handicap at the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting. He may miss the Whyte Handicap on the first day at Trentham and be reserved for the Parliamentary Handicap on the second day Prince FUou (E. J. Didham) covered the same ground in 1:8 3-5. the opening two furlongs in Usee, and he did it well.

The Le Fllonu nine-year-old has made a successful comeback after nearly two years away from racing. From four starts he has recorded two wins and a third. He won on the last day of the Dunedin meeting when he easily accounted for the milers in the Queen Elizabeth HandicapNeeded Gallop

Kumal (B. J. Anderton), wnlch is also engaged at Trentham, finished four lengths behind Captain Morgan (L Tree) and Matlock (W. Gye) at the end of six furlongs in 1:23 2-5. The Kurdistan gelding has had an easy time since he won the Provincial Handicap on the second day of the Dunedin meeting and he will be all the better for the gallop. He is engaged in two races at Timaru on Saturday but his programme has not been completed. The Wanderer (H. T. Anderton) was not extended over five furlongs in 1:10 2-5, the first two furlongs in 27sec. He is engaged in the Seaton Memorial at Washdyke on Saturday; then he will go to Trentham. Unton (H T. Anderton) and Recco (B. J. Anderton) ran half a mile in 57sec. the opening furlong in 13sec. Linton, which was second to Sir Athol at Oamaru. has drawn wide in the Beaconsfield Im-p-vers’ Handicap Reeco which was placed twice early in the season, is due to re«ume racing in the Winchester Maiden Stakes after being off the scene since the New Zealand Cup meeting in November.

Aroair (E J. Didham) beat Innuendo (R J. Skelton) by half a length in 57 3-ssec, the first furlong in 13 2-ssec. Happy Link (B P. Kennedy) eame home the last three furlongs tn 43 2-ssec.
