WAIRAKEI HOTEL
Extension Plans “The Press" Special Service TAUPO, June 26. The Tourist Hotel Corporation has lodged plans with the Rotorua Licensing Committee for a £93,000 extension to the Wairakei Hotel, stage one of a two-stage programme to bring the old building up to the standard of other corporation hotels. The general manager of the corporation (Mr E. Colbeck) said plans for the extension were well advanced, and, subject to the approval of the Cabinet works committee, construction would begin within a few months. “It is the corporation's intention to provide more rooms with baths, and to increase the . capacity of the Wairakei Hotel from 120 to 150, with an extension of restaurant facilities,” he said. Lake Trips Mr Colbeck said the Tourist Hotel Corporation intended to place one of its passenger launches on the lake in October, and run a “round-the-lake” trip three or four times a week for the benefit of guests at Wairakei, the Tokaanu Hotel and the Chateau Tongariro. The launch would have a capacity of about 65 passengers, he said, and would be engaged on scenic cruises into the Western Bays. It is believed the corporation has plans to build a marina on waste ground opposite the Tokaanu Hotel, incorporating a cheap cabin type of accommodation, and a wharf for the mooring of fishing and scenic launches. Tire manager of the Tokaanu Hotel (Mr H. Mulder) indicated that definite plans would be put into operation within a fortnight.
