CRICKET England Well Ahead After First Day

(N .Z.P-A.-Reuter—Copy rig ht) LONDON, June 21. England took full advantage of a green Lord’s wicket today to end the first day of the second test against Pakistan well on top. After dismissing Pakistan for 100, England was four for 176 at stumps.

Javed Burki won the toss. He chose to bat first and his side was struggling right from the start.

The Yorkshire fast bowler. F. S. Trueman, took six for 31, and L Coldwell of Worcestershire, playing in his first test, supported him well with three for 25. In the heavy atmosphere both bowlers swung the ball, as well as moving it off the pitch. Norn of the Pakistan batsmen showed any ability to cope with the attack. The English captain E. R. Dexter, led the assault when England batted. He reached 50 in 55 minutes of scintillating stroke-play, and made 65 in 95 minutes with 10 fours. Pakistan made a bad start. Coldwell bowling Imtiaz Ahmed with only two runs on the board. Hanif Mohammed and Saeed Ahmed defended stubbornly for half an hour, but when Dexter switched Trueman, England took almost complete control. M. C. Cowdrey took the first of three slip catches when he dismissed Hanif oft Trueman, and Dexter yorked Saeed. Burki struggled gallantly for nearly half an hour, but then skied a simple catch, giving Trueman his two. hundreth wicket in test cricket. -Pakistan had lost six for 76 at lunch, and afterwards Truman and Coldwell disposed of the tail, in spite of a carefree final stand of 22 by Antao d'Souza and Mohammad Farooq. Cowdrey put the English innings on a firm basis with a masterly innings of 41, and Dexter built superbly on that foundation. Farooq, who worked up to a lively pace, raised his side’s morale, by disposing of Dexter.and K F. Barrington with successive deliveries. The loss of two wickets in the last 15 minutes was a luxury England could afford.

but against tougher opposition, such as Australia, it could have been calamitous.
