ROYAL TOUR NEXT YEAR

Meeting At Flemington (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, June 22. The Victoria Racing Club would arrange a special race meeting at Flemington in honour of the Queen’s visit next year if her itinerary permitted, the chairman of the V.R.C., Sir Chester Manifold, said today. He said the committee would discuss it when the itinerary was known. He hoped it would be possible for the Queen to see the running of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a race first run ir. honour of her visit to Flemington in 1954. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a one-and-a-half mile weight-for-age race, was first run on February 27, 1954, when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Flemington. The Duke of Edinburgh Australian Cup was run the same day. The 1954 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was won by Cromis, owned by the late Mr E. A. Underwood, a V.R.C. committeeman. It is now one of the most important races on the calendar and has been won by Sailor’s Guide (twice). Redcraze, Dhaulagiri and Nilarco. The Queen Mother saw Sailor’s Guide score his second win in 1958 The race is usually run on the last day of the VRIC. autumn meeting, which is likely to be on March 16. 1963. In 1958 it was brought forward to the first day of the meeting to coincide with the Queen Mother's visit to Flemington.
