LONDON, June 21 The four-year-old Frenchtrained horse Balto today won the Gold Cup at Ascot Sagacity was second and Pride third Balto, a four-year-old owned by Mr Andre Rueff. scored France's ninth postwar victory in the cup. Balto's victory was worth £11.205 in orize money to his owner, a member of a Paris banking family was beginner’s luck for Mr Rueff. who had not seen Ascot until today and had not had a runner tn England before He has owned racehorses for only a year The winning distance gives no idea of the ease of Balto’s victory All the way up the straight. Palmer rode him with only his hands, while J Lindley, on Sagacity, and D. Keith, on Prolific, were hard at work It was a aiance ride for Palmer He got the mount on Balto when the bolt's usual
jockey, M Garcia, had an accident and had to stand down
Palmer was riding his second Ascot Gold Cup winner He won the race on Wallaby tn 1959 Balto was bought by Mr Rueff for only £2212 It is trained by M Bonaventure, a former steeplechase jockey Lord Sefton’s Berkshiretrained horse Gaul won the one mile and a half King Edward VII Stakes by threequarters of a length from another Berkshire - trained horse.
