Women's Hockey TOP TEAMS WIN IN EIGHTH ROUND

In the eighth round &f the Canterbury Women's Hockey Association’s senior competition. the two leading teams. University and Carlton, not only won their matches but also strengthened their positions on the championship ladder. This was because their nearest challengers. Rawhiti and Harewood, were surprisingly held to draws by Digby’s and Hinemoa respectively. After rain during the week, the grounds at Hospital corner were heavy, demanding the firm hitting of passes. Overhead conditions were good. Results were:— University 7, Aranui 2. Carlton 2, Christchurch West 0. Harewood 2, Hinemoa 2. Rawhiti 0. Digby’s 0. Competition points are: University 7s. Carlton 6, Rawhiti 5, Harewood 4. Digby’s 3 j Z2, Aranui Hinemoa 2. Christchurch West 1&. CARLTON v. CHRISTCHURCH , WEST Carlton did not produce its best form in this match, whose outcome remained in the balance until late in the second half. The trapping and passing of the Carlton players were not as accurate as they were more prone to technical error. Their opponents, however, lacked the skill to take advantage of their lapses, and Carlton pulled the game out of the fire .with a determined rally in the closing stage-. The Carlton custodian. J. Wilson, played very soundly, and has been a distinct acquisition to her team throughout the season. At left-back L. Drummond’s reliable trapping and well-timed tackling were much in evidence, and her partner, M. Smart, showed improvement, mainly because she eliminated much of her tendency to flvhitting. In repulsing opposing attacks they were well supported by J Rogers at centrehalf. who also rendered valuable assistance to her forwards m attack. She is a most determined player and was certainly the best half on the field in this match. At right-half J. Witte was less prominent than usual, showing an inclination to drift out of position. The forwards showed little combination, their passing beins unreliable, especially in the case of G. Phillips in the centre M. Golledge infused some spirit into her play nn the r ight-wing. and the back-tackling of J. Chilvers at inside-right was an asset to her team. G. Franklin made many good saves In the West goal, particularly in the first half, but the backs. J. Gunn and R Lyell, seemed less mobile than usual, the heavv ground .ipnearing to aff Q ct their form The defender wa« K. Wi«e at >-ioht-ha’f. he- tacklin’? and covering proving invaluable The fcp*wa’-ds were nnt sive. J. Bennett and B. Withers made some good runs on the wings, but achieved little success with their centre passes and the inside forwards were unable to make any penetration through the centre. The Carlton goals were scored by J. Thomson and G. Phillips. HAREWOOD V. HINEMOA Having established a lead of two goals Ha re wood a p neared to have the game well in hand, but two chaotic lapses by the defence in its own circle allowed Hinemoa to equalise against the run of play. The Harwood backs, J. Murray and Y. Turner, were sound enough, without being subjected to undue pressure, although they were obliged to cover a defensive weakness at left-half L. Watson played a good game at centre-half, marking A. Gile' of Hinemoa effectively, and J Paget was also prominent in the half-line, although her passing often lacked accuracy. The attack was virtually limited to solo breaks by H. Walker and D. Eddy, these two lacking adequate support. Both performed extremely well in these circumstances. H. Walker being a constant threat to the Hinemoa defence. Outstanding for Hinemoa were the two backs. J. Oram and P. Cosgrove. Their positional play was very good, and their intercepting and decisive tackling repeatedly repulsed Harewood. The former has shown steady improvement throughout the season, and is now one of the best backs in the competition. The halves worked hard without being particularly impressive, and the pick of the forwards was M. Green on the left-wing and K. Morris at inside-left, the lat-

ter dribbling with dogged determmation.

Harewood’s two goals were scored by H Walker, and K Morris scored twice for Hinemoa.

RAWHITI v. DIGBY'S

In hold.ng Rawhiti the Digby's defence showed sonn improvement, but tne ladu.e o. eitrier forward line to score reflected a lack of psnetrativt skill which Handicapped both teams. In the defensive melee* there was much kicking of tlu ball, but no suggestion that a new soccer star had arisen. B. Mackinson played an excellent game in the Digby’s goal and the backs were more successful because they were less venturesome in positioning ‘hemselves upfield. C. Blundfen on the left was especially prominent. producing her best game of the season. At righthalf P. Flewellyn was very •enacious, her cover defence being most valuable. The forward line was reorganised but there was no noticeable ’ improvement in combination. M, Healey on the left-wing was the best of them, showing determination and thrust in her dribbling. N. Lennie was quite .outstanding for Rawhiti at leftback, her tackling, trapping, intercepting, passing and covering being of high quality, A. Rouse contributed another sound game at left-half, of which her tackling was a feature. The forwards experienced a disappointing day with their trapping. with the result that many attacks expired at their inception and attempts at passing movements were frustrated without intervention from the opposition. C. Herrett was the best of them and the line was less effective because of the absence of A. Schimanski. UNIVERSITY v. ARANUI

University's tendency to play casually for the first 10 minutes was emphasised by Aranui who scored two opportunist goals As a result of this sobering experience there was little that was casual thereafter, and by half-time University had evened the score. This match was played on an excellent ground at Ham, and University took full advantage of a weak defence and rather insufficient advantage of the good surface to annihilate Aranui in the second spell. After a hesitant start the University backs, G. Falloon and R. Goomes, improved, and their steadiness was a factor which enabled them to cooperate with their halves most effectively. At centre-half S. Comer imposed her usual domination on the midfield play, her passing ability making her forward line the most fortunate one in the competition. The speed with which she moved to tackle the inside forwards quickly wrested the initiative from Aranui. J. Gainsford was most tenacious at left-half, and if a little too deliberate at times in getting her pass away, was accurate in placing it. A. Colville was very sound cn the right, although she was not moving with her usual speed. The forwards showed improvement and some return to form. P. Anderson and L. Kearns dribbled more effectively on the wings, and both enjoyed much greater success with their passing. The former combined well with T. Minehan, who dribbled well and fed the inside forwards with increased accuracy. F. Kelly was very lively in the centre, and at times produced some splendid stickwork in the circle. K McKerriow played an outstanding game at inside-left. Her back-tackling was thorough, her stickwork effective, and her crossfield passing well executed. She also made some very good individual breaks. B. Strong played well in the Aranui goal. She held University at bay for some time, and emerged from a difficult game with credit. A. Fleete toiled hard all day and was the backbone of the defence. Lacking much support she had an unenviable task but she played with skill and determination to the end. There was some covering between the backs and wing-halves in the first half, but it fell away badly as Universityincreased the pressure. G. Meyer and J. Davies made some fast solo breaks in the forward line, which took quick advantage of early lapses in a defence whose later improvement clamped an effective vice on any further marauding. Goals were scored for University by F. Kelly (4). K. McKerrow (2) and T. Minehan. and G. Meyer and J Davies scored for Aranui.
