“Valuable Asset In Emergency”

The skills required for yacht racing were those which could be turned to use for national defence, the former officer commanding the Canterbury division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (Mr J. N. Allan) said when he spoke at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Canterbury R class squadron on Saturday evening. Mr Allan said that although he was not a yachtsman, he never lost an opportunity—when the sport was mentioned—of emphasising the part played by “small boat men" in the rescue of the British Army from Dunkirk in World War 11. “Yopur physical fitne's, your resourcefulness in the way you conostruct your boats and sail them and your ability to think quickly and act promptly in tricky situations are the very qualities that would enable you to make a valuable contribution to the country in time of emergency." he said. Mr Allan presented trophies won during the last season as follows: Squadron championship, Fantastic (G. J. and C. J Cooke, Waimakiriri); Pegasus crest. Reply <G. J. Good and D. Balm.
