Canterbury Jockey Club

Sir,—A recent brochure sent by the Canterbury Jockey Club to members, giving a description of the new stand now in course of erection states that the seating capacity will be 2600 Accompanying the brochure was the annual report and balance sheet and also the proposed alterations to rules. One proposed alteration is to increase the membership to 1350 and ultimately to 1500 As each member is supplied with two courtesy stand passes as well as his own, this means that on the principal days, with the usual full attendance, 4500 seats will be required. For several years it has been a case of either get your seat and stop there all day or join the throng and stand up. If this motion is carried the position will be worse than ever. Most clubs aim to give the members a seat; not so the Canterbury Jockey Club —l5OO at £8 8s speaks for itself.—Yours, etc, VERY OLD MEMBER. June 13. 1962. [The secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club (Mr F T H Bell) said: “It is suggested that ‘Very Old Member’ should attend the annual meeting to be held shortly, when more information will be given to members. In actual fact, on the three main race days at Riccarton this season, the attendance of members was only 57 per cent, on Grand National Steeplechase day, 64 per cent, on New Zealand Cup day, and 48 per cent, on Easter Monday. On the other days, of course, attendances were even lower. The new stand and luncheon room, soon to be available to members at a cost of approximately £120.000, will provide accommodation and facilities equal to any in New Zealand."]
