Nuclear Bomb Simulation

Australia will explode a simulated nuclear bomb on the Cape York Peninsula (North Queensland) next

year, A huge charge of conventional high explosive will be placed on a 140 ft tower to test blast effect. The Minister for Defence (Mr A. G. Townley) who announced the experiment today, said that because only conventional explosives would be used, there would be no question of any radiation hazard.

The explosion would be on Crown land in the Iron range area, about 320 miles north of Cairns. The experiment would determine the effects of large explosions in an area covered by tropical rain forest.

It would be designed to ensure complete safety of participants, observers and local inhabitants, and would take place only in appropriite weather.
