Quadrangular Table Tennis Tourney

TJESULTS from the quadrangular table tennis tournament in Invercargil' today could give a reliable indication of Canterbury’s chances in the season’s twe major fixtures against Wellington and Otago. Todaj Canterbury’s teams will be opposed by the representatives of Otago, Southland and South - Canterbury. So far this season Canterbury has convincingly defeated Nelson, Marlborough West Coast and Hutt Vallej but, with the possible exception of the last-named, none of those teams is of a higt standard. Today’s matches against Otago, in particulai will be a better test. Canterbury’s two top mer players, J. Armstrong anc T. R. D Flint, competed witt some success at the Hutt Valley tournament last weekend. Armstrong lost to the former Australian champion G. J. Jennings, narrowly it five games, and Flint tool the eventual winner, M. L Dunn (Wellington), to < hard three-game match. These players will meet B A. Foster, rated as the So-utl Island's top player, whet Canterbury plays Otago to day Armstrong last seasot had the measure of Foster it most of their meetings, ant Flint should also give tha player a hard struggle. It

■ the bottom half of the Can- ; terbury team, V. N. BrightI well and K. F. Stevenson ( have not shown such a eoni sistently high standard of ( play, but should be as good as their opposite numbers. Canterbury’s women's team ( should be too strong for all opposition. Mrs J. Shadbolt. . the South Island title-holder, is in good form this season, and was runner-up for *’ Hutt Valley title to the New Zealand second - ranked ' nlayer, Miss J. Brown Miss . F. Inglis has beaten Mrs , Shadbolt in club matches this season, and Mrs J Prisk has : also shown excellent form • Mrs T. May will fill fourth position. and she is ! nationally-ranked. ! With the transfer of R. L i Foster to Wellington. South- • land will not field its cus- . tomary very strong men’s ■ team. The former Canter- . bury player. R. W. R. Meri cer, should be hard to beat, : and J. L. Catto, outstanding as a junior, still retains some i of his ability in Invercargill. Mrs Shadbolt may not find 1 much opoosition in this 1 tournament. Miss V Brau- ' mann. the top Otago player. 1 has a lot of ability, but is not ' consistent, and the other 1 women players likely to be ! oresent should not trouble ! Canterbury's best. < Canterbury should have little difficulty in adding to its unbeaten record for the season.
