R. W. Gasnier, the brilliant Australian Rugby League centre threequarters, has been chosen to- captain Australia in the first test against Great Britain today. Only 23, Gasnier is the youngest player ever to lead an Australian test team.

The veteran front-row forward, H. L. White, playing his one hundred and sixty-sixth game for Auckland and his two hundred and third firstclass match, made the run which led to his side’s

only try in the Queen's Birthday fixture with Waikato at Hamilton. He peeled off the line-out from the No. 2 position, seized the ball and charged to within a few yards of the Waikato line, where he was tackled by D. S. Clarke. The ball rolled clear and R. H. Graham, the Auckland captain, scored a try. ★ Perhaps there is no keener player in the senior basketball competition than J. Brownie of the Kakatai team. Miss Brownie finds time to coach the Leithfield team, as well as travel into town from Amberley for club practices and Saturday matches. Last Saturday she took the Leithfield team for practice in the morning, refereed its game in the afternoon, and managed to arrive in Christchurch in time for the Kakatai-St. Nicholas match. ★ G. G. Spencer, the Southland and South Island front row Rugby forward, has recently been included in the Southland wrestling team to take part in the New Zealand championships at Invercargill in September. This is no mean feat, for the province has produced a high standard in wrestling in recent years.
