Fine Example, Says Minister CNZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June «. The Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Hanan, said today he was *briUed that a Maori. Miss Maureen Kingi, bad won the “Miss New Zealand” contest. He said the Kingi family, of Rotorua, was a shming example to Maori and pakeha of what a Maori family could achieve. Miss King!, a 19-year-o’rf radiographer, of Auckland would bring tremendous credit to the Ngati Wbakaue tribe, the Maori people, and to New Zealand. Mr Irikau Kingi. Maureen’s father, was a highly-esteemed member of the staff of the Maori Affairs Department in Rotorua where he was a licensed interpreter (first grade) and clerk of the Maori Land Court, Mr Hanan said. One of hi* other three children was a carpenter and another—one of only three or four Maoris holding the B.Com. degree—was an accountant in Wellington. Another daughter was employed in the Social Security Department in Wellington and was studying for her BA. desree Mr Hanan said that when he and the whole country were making a special effort to encourage Maoris to seek higher education and to qualify in various vocations, it was most encouraging to have the example Of a fine Maori family like the Kingis. who demonstrated the good use that the Maori people could make of education.
