2500 Collectors In Appeal On June 16
More than 2500 collectors would take part in the appeal for funds for the freedom from hunger campaign to be held in Christchurch on June 16, said the Christchurch secretary for C.0.R.5.0. (Mr G. H. Coley) yesterday. He said that Christchurch had been divided into 90 zones, with a church taking responsibility for each zone. The Bank of New Zealand would open on the Saturday to provide banking facilities for the collectors. In country districts community organisations were organising the collection, said Mr Coley. The collections would be carried out in all main towns in Canterbury. Blenheim, Nelson, and the West Coast with the exception of Westport. Because of the damage caused by the earthquakes in Westport the appeal there would be postponed until June 30.
In more than 1009 churches throughout New Zealand tomorrow will be observed as freedom from hunger cam-
paign Sunday. References will be made to the worldwide freedom from hunger campaign and congregations will be urged to pray and work for its success.
The Rev. H. C Dixon, secretary of tne New Zealand campaign committee, said yesterday that approval had been given by the heads of all the major church communions in New Zealand to the holding of the special Sunday's worship. The Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev. C. R. Sprackett) yesterday asked Presbyterian ministers and youth workers to bring before congregations and youth organisations the fact and importance of the campaign.
“It is the duty of every Christian to feed the hungry through informed, generous, and prayerful sunport of the campaign appeal on June 16,” said Mr Sprackett. The North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society had given £250 to the campaign, said the centre president (Mrs R. I. Brake) yesterday. In addition, subcentres in the Canterbury territory were sending in donations and the Junior Red Cross had made the campaign one of its special projects for the year. The donations would be channelled through the League of Red Cross Societies to support the milk powder fund administered by the society.
Fire In Eaves.—A fire which started about 2.25 p.m. yesterday, in the eaves of a house occupied by Oscar James Corbett, 232 Salisbury street, was attended by two units from the Central Fire Station. Damage to the house was slight.
