GAOL FOR RAPE
Two Auckland Youths (A'Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 8. Gaol sentences of three years each were imposed today by Mr Justice Boys in Auckland on William Barry Henry, aged 20. an apprentice fitter and turner, and William John Taylor, aged 19. an apprentice butcher, who had been found guilty of rape A third youth. lan Richard Henry, aged 18. an apprentice motor mechanic, was admitted to probation for three years, ordered to pay £5O towards the cost of the prosecution and to be home every night except Saturday by 9 pm He will be allowed out until midnight on Saturdays during his probation term. Mr M. Robinson, for the Henry brothers, submitted that it was rape in a minor category. The girl concerned had been a willing party up •o a certain point. Mr R P, Smellie, for Taylor, said there had been some degree of encouragement from the girl
Passing sentence. his Honour said the deterrent aspect was important. Sentences of up to five years had been imposed on youths to stamp out rape The girl concerned had been foolish There were fewer signs of multiple rape in this case than in some others that came before the Court.
